Nestlé UK & Ireland has been award the prestigious Ian MacLaurin Award for Supply Chain Excellence at the annual IGD Food Industry Awards .
The team picked up the award for an initiative which has increased on shelf availability of products in major supermarkets and helped retailers make better use of space in their distribution centres.
Since March 2011, Nestlé Supply Chain have been working with three major supermarkets to deliver more frequent and smaller, daily deliveries to their distribution centres. This helped improve the availability of Nestle products on the shelf and at the same reducing stock within the value chain. They were able to do this by combining orders from all the retailers in a geographical area rather than sending one full truck per retailer.
The initial trial was so successful that it was further rolled out in June this year and the team have plans to roll out where the same benefits can be realised.
Head of Supply Chain for Nestlé UK & I, Mark Jones said: “The team recognised the external environment has become more and more competitive and that there was an opportunity to support our customers need to lower operational costs and at the same time ensure shoppers could more easily find what they needed when they needed it on the supermarket shelves. This award is a fantastic way for the team's hard work to be recognised.”
The award was presented by Tony Mitchell, Supply Chain Director Tesco, he said: “Nestlé was able to demonstrate an impressive array of improvement projects that are delivering real business benefits across their supply chain. What impressed the judges the most was the way they had engaged with their staff to really understand from people doing the job how they could make improvements, which we felt gave them an even greater chance of success and sustainability.”
