Unlocking the power of food to enhance the quality of life for everyone

"Nestlé UK & Ireland is a part of the largest food and beverage company in the world. Collectively, our reach is enormous. We produce more than 2,000 brands which you will find in 97% of households across the world.

But our size and our influence carry great responsibility. We know that what we do as a business has tremendous impact – on people, families and their pets, on communities and on the planet.

Our purpose is to unlock the power of food to enhance the quality of life for everyone – to meet the needs of a growing population to have access to sustainable, delicious and affordable nutrition. We’re working to advance the health of people and planet while ensuring there will be enough nutritious food, grown sustainably – now and for generations to come."

Stefano Agostini, Nestlé UK & Ireland CEO

The way we do business and the way we live is having a lasting impact on our planet. Food plays an important role. We need it to survive. And we need the environment to produce the food we need.

But, while 2 billion people are overweight or obese, 800 million go hungry. While food production is the single largest cause of environmental degradation and climate instability, a third of the food we produce is never eaten. By 2050, pound for pound, there could be more plastic in the ocean than fish. The human race has overstepped the limits of our planet’s ability to regenerate.

It cannot continue like this.

What are we doing about it?

As a company, we’re committed to change. We’re reducing landfill waste to zero, fighting deforestation with satellites, moving to 100% renewable energy and 100% recyclable or reusable packaging. We’re investing in regenerative agriculture, reforestation and biodiversity schemes and restricting the use of fertilisers and antibiotics. We’re changing our products to focus on balanced, healthy ingredients.

We’ve committed to helping 50 million children to lead healthier lives; to improving the livelihoods of 30 million people; and reducing impact and becoming a more regenerative business. We have the reach and scale to be a part of the solution.

Providing for our families, empowering our communities, protecting our planet. Our food system is our future.

How we grow, process, transport, consume and waste food is hurting both people and the planet

We need significant, even radical change

To achieve a future where people’s health and the environment are not irreversibly damaged, we need to start living within our means. Meeting the targets of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Agreement requires an urgent and fundamental shift in the way that we produce and consume food.

What does ‘sustainable’ look like?

A sustainable food system is one that uses regenerative agriculture to maintain healthy soils, water cycles and biodiversity, all of which can help to limit climate change. It’s a system that enhances the lives of its farmers and suppliers, and the communities they live in. It’s one that unlocks the power of food to enhance the quality of life for everyone.

We want to help shape a better and healthier world, a sustainable world, for people, families and pets, for our communities and for the planet.
