Nestlé invites York students to experience their best school trip

Nestlé UK will today (Wednesday 7 October) welcome students to its York factory to highlight the variety of careers in the food and drink industry available to those who pursue maths and science in higher and further education.

Students aged between 14 and 16, from York High and the Joseph Rowntree School will spend the day taking part in interactive careers workshops before receiving an exclusive tour of the famous KitKat factory.

The event has been organised in partnership with the Your Life campaign which encourages young people to study Maths and Physics as a pathway into a wide range of exciting careers.

Nestlé’s best school trip provides young people in York with the opportunity to learn first-hand about the job opportunities available to students who study maths and science and the different routes into the world of work.

Throughout the day, the students will have the chance to quiz some of Nestlé’s science, maths and engineering graduates and apprentices about their current roles, as well as completing a range of science and maths activities.

Richard Martin, Technical Director for Confectionery at Nestlé UK and Ireland and Your Life Board member said:

“We are delighted to welcome students from York High and the Joseph Rowntree School to Nestlé York. To see how some of the world’s most popular chocolate is made will no doubt be a highlight to the students.

“But what’s more important is that it is a great opportunity for us to show how subjects such as maths and science can unlock a career in the dynamic world of food and drink manufacturing.

“Most young people don’t know that these subjects can be used to pursue a career in such an exciting industry.  At Nestlé, we have a number of scientists, nutritionists and engineers that all use these subjects on a daily basis. We hope that this school trip will inspire the students to explore these roles in the future. ”

“The Your Life campaign aims to tackle the problem of highlighting industries where jobs are plentiful and talent is missing. Careers inspiration in our schools is at the heart of the solution. This can take many forms, including YouTube films and vlogs, to an employer talk or the surprising use of Maths and Physics in a lesson.

“By coming on a Best School Trip, students will see first-hand the amazing careers that could be available to them by studying STEM subjects and the incredible companies they could join like Nestlé. We want them to share this new found knowledge and inspiration with their peers, year group, school and ultimately their wider community.”
