10 ways Nestlé UK & Ireland is contributing to a healthier future

Here at Nestlé UK and Ireland, we’re always looking to improve, after all, we didn’t get to be more than 150 years old and the world’s largest food and drink company without embracing change. We understand we have a responsibility to help shape a better, healthier, happier and more prosperous world.

Here are 10 ways we are doing our bit:

1. Less sugar and calories – same amazing taste!

We have removed 2.6 billion teaspoons of sugar and more than 60 billion calories from products across our portfolio in just three years since 2015 – we have made sure that our products still taste amazing and the overall experience of each product is unchanged while contributing less sugar and fewer calories to the diet.

2. Pets at work

Through the Pets At Work (PAW) programme, led by Nestlé Purina, our Gatwick office became the first Nestlé HQ worldwide to allow employees to bring their furry friends into the office. The results...? Higher employee engagement and talent retention, greater wellbeing, higher performance and productivity, increased inspiration and decreased stress. The runaway success of this programme led to Nestlé launching the Pets at Work (PaW) Alliance to help more businesses become dog-friendly.

3. Less salt in the nation’s diet

Salt is an important and useful food ingredient. However, too much salt in our diets increases the risk of health issues – that’s why we’ve been working hard to reduce the salt from across our products where it’s included as an ingredient. We are making great progress! In 2017 Nestlé Breakfast Cereals were made with 48 million less teaspoons of salt.*

4. Nestlé employee health checks

In 2015 we launched a programme to offer all of our UK employees free, evidence-based health checks. Through these one-to-one health assessments, we promote healthy behaviour and give employees a better understanding of their health risks, so they can make informed choices about their health.

5. Less saturated fats in our recipes

In 2013, we reformulated our KitKat recipe resulting in 3,800 tonnes of saturated fat being removed from the public’s diet and, in 2015, we took 8 tonnes of saturated fat out of our Fab ice cream recipe.

6. The Nestlé Reminiscence Pack

The Alzheimer’s Society says that using familiar objects from the past to help those with dementia can be a powerful tool so we created a reminiscence pack full of materials taken from the Nestlé UK & Ireland archives. These are available for download on our website and can be printed to create a whole collection of physical materials.

7. Whole grain is No.1 in our cereals

Every Nestlé cereal with the green banner now contains at least 8 grams of whole grain per serving and, has whole grain as the number one ingredient.

8. Clear labelling

Clear and accessible information about the product and nutrition help consumers make informed and the right choices for them. We work hard to ensure that the packaging and nutrition information  is engaging and easy to understand. We are using the Government colour coded front of pack labelling on our products to show at a glance the levels of fat, saturates, sugars and salt, and the amount of calories and how much fat, saturates, sugars and salt is in a portion of the product. Additional information is included on back of pack to help lead a healthy and balanced diet.

9. A new way to think about sugar!

Nestlé scientists have discovered a way of changing the structure of sugar so that it dissolves more quickly on your tongue. This allows you to perceive an almost identical sweetness as before, but with much less of the ingredient. Milkybar Wowsomes, a chocolate bar with 30% less sugar, is the first in the world to use this technology and was introduced to the UK and Ireland in 2018.

10. Our employees raised over £200k for Macmillan Cancer Support

By 2030 over four million people in the UK will be living with cancer. Nestlé employees from across the UK have teamed together to fundraise more than £200,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support in just 18 months. Our fundraising activities and initiatives have ranged from bake sales, charity balls and raffles to more daring endeavours in the UK’s great outdoors. Nestlé UK’s partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support began in 2016 and continues into 2018.
