Redistributing surplus food
At Nestlé we're committed to reducing food waste, whether that's by redistributing surplus to local communities, or turning products from our manufacturing processes into energy or animal feed.
We’re signatories of the WRAP Courtauld Agreement and have pledged to reduce food waste within our own operations by 50% by 2030 (vs a 2018 baseline) in line with SDG 12.3 which aims to halve per capita food waste globally by 2030.
We work closely with a number of food waste charities in the UK and Ireland to make sure that good quality surplus food reaches the families who need it most. Our partners include FareShare, Community Shop, Company Shop and FoodCloud (Ireland).
FareShare
We began our partnership with FareShare, the UK’s largest charity tackling food waste for social good, in 2005. FareShare takes good quality surplus food from the food industry and redistributes it to 8,500 charities and community groups across the country.
Since 2005, our donations have provided more than six million meals to vulnerable families in the UK.
Working with Arla, we are also contributing to better breakfasts for families in the UK. Our donations of Nestlé Shreddies and Cravendale milk are providing the equivalent of 1.25million breakfasts for charitable organisations supporting families in need.
Community Shop and Company Shop
The Company Shop Group is the UK’s largest redistributor of surplus food. Our commitment to their social enterprise, Community Shop, is the largest of any UK food manufacturer.
Community Shop is a community food centre supporting people in some of the UK’s most deprived communities.
During the Covid-19 pandemic we made a £1 million investment in Community Shop to enable vulnerable families access to food. We helped Community Shop open a new store in one of the most deprived areas of the UK, which offers nutritious food at heavily discounted prices, a community kitchen and support services to help people get back on their feet.
FoodCloud
FoodCloud is a not-for-profit social enterprise in Ireland which diverts valuable surplus food to benefit individuals, families and communities who are most in need.
Our partnership started in 2018 and up to the end of 2023 alone we’ve contributed over 135 tonnes of coffee, confectionery and cereals. This food is redistributed to charities in Ireland and is equivalent to about 315,000 meals valued at €290,000.
Most significantly by donating our surplus stock it has avoided over 450 tonnes of CO2 being created.
We remain the only Irish supplier to not only provide surplus food but also make a per-pallet financial contribution to FoodCloud. This covers the costs of FoodCloud managing, storing and redistributing unforeseen food surpluses.
During pandemic, we supported FoodCloud, with an additional investment of €110,000 to address food poverty In Ireland as a result of Covid-19.
