Nestlé UK today announced that 73 new jobs will be created in York over a three year period, as Nespresso, the iconic premium coffee business, establishes a Customer Relationship Centre at the company’s York site.

The establishment of the Centre marks another step on Nestlé’s York site’s journey to become a world-class business facility. In addition to housing one of the world’s biggest confectionery factories, Nestlé York now incorporates logistics and distribution facilities serving the company’s UK food and beverages businesses, as well as being home to a global R&D centre. More than 1,700 Nestlé employees are based in the city, more than half of whom are not in manufacturing roles.

Paul Grimwood, Chief Executive, Nestlé UK and Ireland said: “Over the last twenty years we have invested £150 million in York, transforming the site into a multi-purpose business centre which is now fit for the future. The announcement of the new Nespresso Customer Relationship Centre shows that York is a hub for Nestlé, both in the UK and globally.”

Nestlé UK is investing half a million pounds in establishing the Nespresso Centre, which will handle all calls and email contacts with Nespresso Club Members in the UK and Ireland. A team of 48 coffee specialists will start taking calls from October 2010 with plans to grow headcount to 73 by 2012.

Brema Drohan, Managing Director of Nespresso UK and Ireland said: “Last year Nespresso grew 35.5% in the UK and Ireland. This move marks Nespresso’s commitment to providing further impetus to business growth and strengthens our best-practice customer service. It makes more sense than ever to establish a service operation in the UK, further guaranteeing the delivery of the unique Nespresso experience to local customers time and time again.”

Local politicians welcomed the news. Hugh Bayley, Labour prospective parliamentary candidate for York Central, commented; “I am delighted that Nestlé is creating 73 new jobs in York. This just goes to show that York continues to offer a competitive home for world class businesses.” While his Conservative rival Susan Wade Wicks said; “In a tough economic climate it is great to see manufacturers like Nestlé continuing to invest in new jobs and skills in York”

Nestlé today announced its first quarter sales results. “In what continues to be a challenging environment we made a strong start to the year, with good results in both our core confectionery and coffee businesses”, said Grimwood.
