Bill Grant, MP for Ayr, Carrick and Cumnock, toured the local Nestlé factory at Girvan, Carrick last week to see first-hand the expertise needed to produce a key ingredient integral for creating some of the nation’s favourite sweet treats.

Mr Grant was welcomed to the Girvan factory by Nestlé UK Head of Technical for Confectionery, Richard Martin and Nestlé’s UK Head of Public Affairs, Katherine Clifford. The group discussed how the factory interacts with the rest of the Nestlé supply chain in the UK and Ireland, how it works with and supports local dairy farmers, and how recent and ongoing sustainability projects with a local college have seen improvements in the region’s rich and rural biodiversity.

Nestlé Head of Technical for Confectionery, Richard Martin said:

“It was our pleasure to show Bill Grant MP around our factory. At Girvan we make milk chocolate crumb, a key ingredient in the production of the chocolate that Nestlé uses for famous brands like Quality Street, KitKat and Aero in the UK and Ireland. I was proud to tell Mr Grant how all our milk comes from local farmers, how easy access to this high quality ingredient first attracted our business to this rural location back in the 1970s, and how its sustainable development has allowed us to remain and prosper together.”

Bill Grant MP Said: “I had a very enjoyable and informative visit to Nestlé Girvan. It is clear that the Girvan plant is a key player in the success of Nestlé UK and Ireland by providing a high quality ingredient for its UK confectionery. Quality ingredients are embedded in Nestlé products and around 65 dairy farms in Ayrshire can be proud of the high quality milk supplied to Nestlé at Girvan”.

The Girvan factory supplies milk crumb for Nestlé factories in York, Fawdon and Halifax where it makes the KitKat, Aero, Rolo, Quality Street and Yorkie.
