Last week, Nestlé was pleased to welcome John Whitby, Member of Parliament for Derbyshire Dales, to its Tutbury site, one of Nestlé’s two specialist Nescafé sites in the UK and the home of Nescafé Dolce Gusto.
In what was the MP’s first visit to Nestlé Tutbury following his election in 2024, Mr Whitby was introduced to the factory and local employees by David Guest, Factory Manager, who provided a guided tour of the site. Mr Whitby was given a first-hand look at Nestlé’s production processes and heard how products from Nestlé’s best-loved coffee brands, Nescafé and Nescafé Dolce Gusto, are made.
The skilled and talented local workforce were also spotlighted during this visit, and Mr Whitby met a range of employees across the site to understand more about Nestlé’s people, the types of roles employed on site and Nestlé’s recent work with Tutbury factory in its Good for Britain, Good for The Future campaign, which shone the light on local employees and their relationship with the rich history of the factory which celebrates its 125th anniversary this year.
The visit was also supported by two recently appointed members of the Nestlé UK&’s National Leadership Team. Martin Krohn, Head of Technical and Production, provided Mr Whitby with an insight into the scale of manufacturing at Tutbury - including how it manages to turnover of over 40 tonnes of green bean coffee a day - and its status a Centre of Excellence for Nestlé coffee production. Mr Whitby also learnt about recent projects that have helped the factory to reduce the usage of water, energy and packaging materials during production processes and contribute to reductions in greenhouse gas emissions in support of Nestlé’s net zero target.
Katya Simmons, Managing Director for Coffee at Nestlé UK and Ireland, outlined the site’s importance to coffee production for the UK and export markets and talked Mr Whitby through Nestlé sustainability initiatives, including progress with the Nescafé Plan 2030 and support for regenerative farming practices.
Speaking on the visit, John Whitby, MP for Derbyshire Dales, said: “Thank you to everyone at Nestlé for a thoroughly enjoyable and interesting visit. I was pleased to see Nestlé’s focus on sustainability and its strategy to deliver positive environmental outcomes. Nestlé’s investment in its employees – from onboarding training programmes to in-house career development paths - was particularly impressive.”
David Guest, Factory Manager at Nestlé Tutbury, said: “It was a pleasure to welcome John Whitby MP to our site. Here at Nestlé Tutbury, we are immensely proud of our products and the hard work that goes on behind the scenes to make it what it is. It was great to showcase our people and recent sustainability projects to our local MP today.”
