Rethinking our operations
We’re making changes to the way we manufacture and transport our products to reduce the impact of our operations.
Whilst the majority of our emissions come from our agriculture supply chain, our efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in our operations are also critical for reaching net zero.
Since 2016, all our sites in the UK and Ireland have been powered by 100% grid-supplied renewable electricity through our investment in wind power solutions.
We continue to make on-site investments in innovative technologies to generate our own renewable energy, such as hydropower, biomass and through the installation of solar panels, alongside reducing the carbon footprint of our transport and logistics network.
Using renewable energy at our sites

Coffee powered by coffee At our Nescafé coffee factory in Tutbury we recycle our used coffee grounds (50,000 tonnes of them every year) to create steam to help power the factory. This also reduces the need for up to seven lorry trips for waste removal to our site every day. This means nothing goes to waste as we also clean and reuse our water too.Watch here

Water powered by water Our state-of-the-art Nestlé Waters factory in Buxton, Derbyshire, was designed and built with sustainability at its core. The factory is one of the most innovative and efficient bottling facilities in Europe, and generates 50% of the power it uses through water itself. 100% renewable electricity is used to power the site, with 50% supplied by hydropower and 50% supplied by wind power.
Transport and distribution

Driving towards net zero We’ve charged up our efforts towards achieving net zero emissions by transitioning our entire Nestlé-owned UK fleet of trucks from diesel fuel to more sustainable alternatives. This includes switching to Bio-LNG, electric and HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) alternatives. To support this, we’ve invested in electric charging infrastructure at our sites in York, Halifax, Tutbury and East Midlands Gateway.Read more

Moving more by rail Nestlé UK and Ireland has delivered a first-of-its-kind rail container trial which increases freight capacity to allow our food and drink products to be double stacked on trains. One tonne of products moved by a rail journey produces 76% less emissions than a diesel road journey (source: Rail Delivery Group). Trials are continuing as we look to grow our rail freight volume.Read more

World-leading distribution Our custom-built distribution centre at East Midlands Gateway, in collaboration with GXO, was built with sustainability in mind. As one of the most advanced distribution centres in the world, sustainability measures include energy-saving LED lighting throughout the facility, environmentally friendly ammonia refrigeration, air source heat pumps for administration and rainwater harvesting.Read more
