Nestlé’s Ireland based in Citywest and Nestlé’s Wyeth Nutrition plant in Askeaton, Co Limerick took part in the ‘Feeding Ireland’s Future 2015’ initiative where the Irish food and grocery industry across Ireland supported young unemployed people. The initiative involved companies providing free pre-employment skills for young people during ‘skills for work week’ which took place during the week 2nd – 6th March 2015.
This initiative followed on from the success of a pilot project in 2014, last year 29 businesses participated, in 56 locations covering every region in the Ireland. The campaign provided 1,519 training opportunities with 98% of participants saying they felt more confident applying for a job. This year the campaign plans to offer more opportunities for young unemployed people across more locations nationwide.
Participants took part in the ‘Feeding Ireland’s Future’ initiative at Citywest and were introduced to Nestlé Ireland’s businesses including sales, supply chain, shopper marketing and finance. Participants of the initiative at the Askeaton site were introduced to the Nestlé’s Wyeth Nutrition plant where they were brought through the plant’s induction process. Another vital element of the initiative was CV preparation and interview skills, which prepared the participants to secure employment in the ever increasing competitive jobs market at both sites.
Deirdre O’Donoghue, Country Manager, Nestlé Ireland stated that this was an important initiative that enabled the company to play a meaningful role in assisting local young people who are unemployed.
“It also mirrors the Nestlé’s European Youth Employment Initiative which ambition is to assist 20,000 young people across Europe find employment; offering 10,000 jobs and creating 10,000 apprentice positions and traineeships by 2016. Nestlé factories and offices across Ireland and UK are opening up their doors to give young people an opportunity to gain the skills they need to get to help them into work place”.
John O’Sullivan, Factory Manager, Wyeth Nutrition: “We know that young people often do not have the opportunity to get an insight into the world of a business and this programme not only lets them gain valuable insights into the food sector but also through our in-house HR experts they will get hands on advice to assist them in improving their interview skills and CVs. The food and grocery industry is one of Ireland’s biggest private sectors employers and there are a huge range of careers on offer.
