David Hix, Nestlé UK & Ireland Supply Chain Director and Eleni Petrides, our Gatwick Charity Champion, have visited Whittington Hospital in London to see how employee fundraising for our charity partner, Macmillan, helps people living with cancer.
Nestlé employees have so far raised more than £237,000 for the charity through a number of activities and, as part of the visit, David and Eleni met Tracey, Macmillan Information and Support Manager, who explained why continued support is much needed.
Tracey’s role is funded by Macmillan and provides expert support to help people overcome the many challenges of living with cancer. The relaxed and friendly atmosphere at the centre gives people time away from the cancer clinic to talk to Tracey and find information on everything from local support groups to help with financial problems.
David and Eleni also met Adam, Haematology Clinical Nurse Specialist, whose role is funded by the NHS but has been adopted by Macmillan to give him access to specialist training opportunities which wouldn’t normally be available without the charity.
Tracey and Adam showed them the Chemotherapy unit and the family room which is used to discuss a diagnosis, as well as give people a personal space to try on their prosthesis for the first time. The room had become run down and has now been transformed into a warm, welcoming environment thanks to Macmillan funding.
David Hix said, “I was blown away by the dedication and compassion of the Macmillan team and how innovative they are in their approach. It was a privilege to meet everyone at the centre and see the incredible work they do.”
Macmillan’s Corporate Partnerships Manager, Hannah Hickman, said, “If it wasn’t for the support and fundraising that takes place in Nestlé sites across the country, people like Tracey and Adam quite simply wouldn’t be in post. Thank you to everyone who has helped to raise over £237,000 for Macmillan to date – it is really helping to make a huge impact on people living with cancer".
