This weekend (22-23 June 2019), saw celebrations for International Women in Engineering Day (IWED) take place around the world. Founded by the Women's Engineering Society, IWED is a global day of international awareness to raise the profile of women in engineering and other rewarding STEM careers where women are significantly underrepresented.
This year Nestlé in the UK & Ireland, as well as supporting the campaign on social media and at its sites across England, has further cause for celebration. Nicole Chamberlain, an Automation and Manufacturing Electrical Services (MES) Engineer and former apprentice now based at Nestlé’s Fawdon, Newcastle site has made the Women in Engineering Top 50 (WE50). The annual who’s who of women in engineering in the UK recognises the women working every day in engineering roles that are vital to the economy and wider prosperity of the UK & Ireland.
Chamberlain's accolade, which has been published in a special supplement for The Guardian newspaper and celebrated in London at a prestigious luncheon reception attended by the WE50 and others in the field, celebrates her progression from apprentice to Engineer at Nestlé. Her dedication to engineering was noted by her recent nomination for a Future Manufacturing Award as she studies for a degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. She also sits on the Nestlé Apprenticeship Board and has become a mentor to other young women joining the business.
