Young artists bring their visions of iced coffee to life in the Nescafé Azera By Design competition

Four young creatives' designs are now on shop shelves across the nation as part of the Nescafé Azera By Design competition, in partnership with The King’s Trust.

The King’s Trust is a youth charity that supports 11- to 30-year-olds who are unemployed or struggling at school, to get their lives on track, giving them the skills and confidence to change their lives.

Now in its fifth year, the By Design competition continues to support young people by providing a platform for emerging artists to showcase their creativity on a national scale.

This year, entrants were asked to create a design on the brief ‘Summer isn’t summer without iced coffee.’ The creatives were encouraged to think about how they would bring their perfect summer day to life. This was the first year in the partnership’s history that entrants were asked to specifically design for iced coffee, reflecting today’s trends in the world of coffee.

Altogether, around 70 creatives submitted their entries, but only four made it through. This year’s talented winners were Zosia Bonkowska, Alexandra Rose, Katie Sowter, and Rebecca Frost.

Zosia Bonkowska

“I wanted to capture that sense of heat, nostalgia, and joy from spending summers with my grandparents, reapplying sun cream, building sandcastles, and eating ice cream.”

Zosia Bonkowska, an illustrator and graphic designer from Poland, now in London, enjoys a playful art style which features quirky characters and expressive linework. Inspired by holiday memories with her grandparents, her Nescafé Azera design captures warmth and nostalgia through a beach scene. Zosia aims to grow her creative business and values competitions for pushing her artistic boundaries.

Alexandra Rose

“There’s something so special about turning an everyday item into a little piece of art.”

Alexandra Rose is an illustrator from Cambridgeshire who found the Nescafé Azera competition through The King’s Trust. Her design features a swirling coffee cup-turned-headpiece to represent the brightness and energy of iced coffee in summer. Alexandra seeks to expand her creative business and views this competition as a key milestone.

Katie Sowter

“Most people think of coffee as a hot drink, but my design is supposed to get people to think of iced coffee as a refreshing alternative.”

Katie Sowter, an illustrator from Nottingham, balances her creative work with caring for her grandmother. Her Nescafé Azera design features a coffee bean on an ice cube, to capture the refreshing feel of iced coffee. Katie aspires to create her own business focused on design and illustration.

Rebecca Frost

“It’s kind of a homage to my Grandpa… he was the best at celebrating the little things, like picnics and iced coffee on a sunny day.”

Rebecca Frost is an illustrator and print designer from the Lake District and currently works as a Design Assistant on a children’s clothing brand. Her Nescafé Azera design pays tribute to her grandfather, the family’s biggest iced coffee fan, and celebrates joyful summer days. Rebecca aims to blend her illustration and print design skills in future projects.
