Ben Parker

Ben Parker, 21, joined the Nestlé team in 2020 on a Level 3 Supply Chain apprenticeship, completing the programme in June 2023. He's now become an Inbound Supply Coordinator, based at Nestlé's Halifax site.
I was finishing sixth form in the middle of the pandemic in 2020 and everything felt so uncertain; I didn't know what I wanted to do or whether I should go to university. However, I was still able to apply for some apprenticeships in my final year of school and join some assessment days virtually.
I chose a Supply Chain apprenticeship at Nestlé as when researching the apprenticeships on offer, I felt like Nestlé aligned to my own values. I love the fact that I work with famous brands every day and it's really rewarding to know you're having an impact on brands that are loved by people across the world.
Getting straight into a workplace environment, being hands on from the beginning and building a network of contacts from the early stages of your career is invaluable.
Being part of the team
As a big business, there are lots of different faces to meet throughout your apprenticeship, but from my first day I was a trusted part of the team. They really helped me develop my skills and gave me opportunities, so I was playing a key part in reaching team goals.
Working with others has enabled me to improve my communication skills, which is something I had always struggled with previously. It's easy to overlook how difficult it can be adapting from a school environment to the workplace, but having a close-knit and supportive team to guide you is one of the best things about the job.
Working with key clients
During my apprenticeship, I was the customer representative for one of the big supermarkets which meant I was the brand's first port of call, and I was in charge of improving our relationship. With my team, I put in place a plan to reduce costs and road miles by increasing pallet utilisation.
We spent time reviewing orders so that we could make sure, where possible, we were only delivering full pallets rather than half. To be able to do this we needed to make sure the customer had the ability to store more product at one time, which meant the project didn't come without its challenges, but it has proved a success, saving money and having a positive environmental impact.

Opening doors
I would really recommend looking into apprenticeships. There are so many different opportunities available, even within the same company, and it can really open doors for the rest of your career. Getting straight into a workplace environment, being hands on from the beginning and building a network of contacts from the early stages of your career is invaluable – plus it's good to be earning money while you're also getting a qualification!
