Developing packaging of the future
A reliance on science
Packaging plays a key role in ensuring food safety. Any solutions to the packaging problem must make it recyclable or reusable.
We created the Nestlé Institute for Packaging Sciences to collaborate with industrial partners and explore possibilities. We evaluate and develop sustainable packaging such as new paper-based materials and bio-degradable plastic.
Buxton® Natural Mineral Water in the UK achieved its 2019 commitment of producing its full range of bottles with recycled PET plastic (rPET), making them some of the lightest in the industry.

A concern shared by everyone
We know that, to make a real difference, our actions must be part of an all-round solution that links our initiatives to society as a whole. It must include producing more sustainable packaging, increasing consumer understanding, making recycling consistent nationwide and ensuring there is an effective infrastructure for recycling.
What are we doing about it?
Globally, we’re investing up to £1.5 billion to lead the move away from virgin plastics to food-grade recycled plastics. We’re also setting our world-class research and development teams the task of developing innovative and sustainable packaging solutions.
Increasing recycled content and recyclable products
Eliminating unnecessary plastics
We removed all plastic stirrers from Nespresso Boutiques in 2019.
