After graduating from Manchester Metropolitan University with a degree in Economics, Sheikh embarked on his HR graduate scheme at Nestlé in 2023. So far, he has worked with the Learning and Development and HR teams, applying the core skills from his degree while developing a diverse set of new skills by working with a wide range of people across the business.

The journey so far

Like many graduates, I left university uncertain about my career path. I wanted to apply the skills I had learnt but was unsure whether to pursue a traditional career for economics graduates. It was only when a career coach at university introduced me to opportunities in the FMCG industry that I began exploring roles in this sector.

I spoke to a number of people who recommended specific companies, and Nestlé stood out. Intrigued by their graduate programmes, I attended a connection day to learn more. During this event, I had the privilege of hearing from leaders across the business and their passion, knowledge, and genuine care for employee development were truly inspiring.

I started as an HR Support Specialist Coordinator and have since transitioned to a Learning and Development Specialist. I divide my time between two managers, both of whom have provided immense support and the freedom to innovate and share my ideas and opinions.

This role has also honed my skills in managing priorities and addressing the diverse needs of our team to ensure that everyone benefits from our initiatives.

Shaping the future of the business

One of the most rewarding parts of my role has been the opportunity to shape the Nestlé Academy programme. Drawing from my own experiences, I have contributed to creating an engaging experience for new apprentices and graduates, ensuring they enjoy a positive start at Nestlé, just as I did.

I have also been involved in planning the annual festival for new graduates, which has been a highlight. My goal was to make the event more interactive, providing new starters with a genuine taste of life at Nestlé and really fostering a sense of community. We collaborated with an external company to design a Nestlé-themed interactive escape room, and I hosted a ‘gameshow’ with my colleagues. Speaking in front of everyone, which might have been daunting in the past, was a breeze thanks to the confidence I have gained through the scheme.

The feedback from managers and new starters was overwhelmingly positive, and the event was deemed a positive addition to the programme.

Feeling at home

Relocating from my family home in Manchester to York for this role was initially daunting, as few people in my family had moved away. However, I have felt incredibly welcomed by everyone I have met since day one. I thrive on interacting with a diverse range of people and make it a point to be in the office as often as possible. The mutual learning and growth I have experienced with my colleagues have been immensely rewarding.

I would encourage anyone from any background to join Nestlé, as the supportive culture is so embedded throughout the entire organization.

I have one more placement left in the Graduate scheme, as a Junior Business Partner at one of Nestlé's manufacturing sites. I am confident that the factory team will embrace me just as warmly as everyone else I have encountered, and I can’t wait to get started.
