Environmental impact of our products

What is the issue?

Products have environmental impacts throughout their life-cycle, from their manufacture all the way to their end-of-life disposal.

Why is it important?

To improve the environmental performance of our products, we use a life-cycle assessment approach to understand where they have the biggest impacts.

  • In progress
  • By 2017 – Develop a roll-out plan for incorporating EcodEX ecodesign principles into operational and product development plans.

Reducing the environmental impact of our products.

Improved products that meet customer expectations.

What are we doing about it?

The way a product or service is designed determines its use of resources and can help to minimise waste throughout its life-cycle. We believe that product life-cycle assessment is the most effective method of determining the overall impacts of making a product on the environment. However, these assessments can be costly and take several months to complete.

To speed up the process and make it more effective, Nestlé S.A. has developed a design and assessment tool called EcodEX. By using data specific to the food and drink industry, the tool gives product development teams a fast, accurate way to evaluate a product’s potential environmental impacts based on a variety of criteria, such as design, recipe and manufacturing process.

In 2015, Nestlé UK and Ireland began piloting the EcodEX tool to explore applications in the UK market. We are currently using the insights provided by the tool to inform our eco-design strategy.

What’s next?

In 2015, a screening exercise at our Fawdon site revealed some key insights regarding the high volumes of water we use in generating power, and how this contributes to the environmental impact of products across their life-cycles. We are planning to use these insights to inform our product innovations in future.
