Ever wondered how to shred wheat? Channel 4’s Food Unwrapped goes behind the scenes to find out

When you’re tucking into your Shredded Wheat each morning, do you ever stop to think about how you actually shred wheat? Well, wonder no more as Channel 4’s Food Unwrapped has gone behind the scenes at the Shredded Wheat bakery in Staverton to find out how wheat goes from field to bowl.

The Nestlé Breakfast Cereal bakery at Staverton produces almost 30 tonnes of the breakfast classic each day – that’s the equivalent of two double-decker buses! Other little-known facts about the much-loved cereal include:

  • Each year, the equivalent of 4 big biscuits and 32 bitesize biscuits are produced for every single person in the UK
  • More than 1.3 million biscuits are made every day at the bakery – enough to fill Wembley Stadium fifteen times over
  • If you lined up all the Shredded Wheat baked in Staverton every year, it would go half-way around the Equator

During his visit to the bakery, host, Jimmy Doherty, learned exactly how you shred 100% whole grain wheat to make a tasty breakfast cereal and sampled a perfectly baked biscuit fresh off the production line.

Matt Robinson, Director of Operations, Nestlé Breakfast Cereals, said:

“Turning 100% British-grown wheat into a delicious 100% whole grain breakfast is surprisingly simple but our team in Staverton put their heart and soul into making Shredded Wheat every day for people across the UK. We’re delighted to have shown Jimmy and the Food Unwrapped team around our bakery to learn more about the recipe that has been known and loved for over one hundred years!”

Tune in tonight at 8.30pm on Channel 4 to find out more.
