Back to Press releases
Gatwick

Joint placement forms part of Nestlé’s European-wide Alliance for YOUth scheme, partnering with over 150 companies across the continent to help young people find work:

 - First of its kind paid 10 week internship to be held at Twitter and Nestlé UK HQs

 - Innovative scheme to include Vine video entries as part of recruitment process

 - Initiative comes as research shows nearly four out of five young people (78%) would consider a STEM  career but more than half (51%) say they know little or nothing about the type of jobs on offer.

Nestlé UK & Ireland has today announced that it has joined forces with Twitter to launch a unique joint internship opportunity. Applications for the 10 week placement open today, with candidates being shortlisted for selection in March.

The internship forms part of Nestlé’s European-wide Alliance for YOUth scheme, in which Nestlé is partnering with over 150 companies across Europe to help young people find work opportunities.

It will see the selected intern gaining a paid 10 weeks of experience, split equally across Nestlé’s UK headquarters and Twitter’s UK head office.

Applications will be open for submission through a dedicated website and alongside the option of a traditional application form, applicants will also have the alternative of impressing by submitting a video entry using the Twitter video platform Vine. The applicant with the best Vine video will be awarded a place at the assessment centre, to take place on 14 April, alongside 12 other participants.

The initiative comes as a recent Nestlé study, conducted by Populus, has revealed that nearly four out of five (78%) 14 to 16 year olds say they would consider a career in a STEM-related industry. However, more than half (51%) say they know little or nothing about the types of jobs that are on offer, with fewer females (41%) aware of career opportunities in a STEM-related field than males (58%).

Dame Fiona Kendrick, CEO and Chairman of Nestlé UK & Ireland said:

“I’m delighted to announce this exciting new partnership with Twitter as part of Nestlé’s Alliance for YOUth initiative. I firmly believe that UK businesses today have an important part to play in helping to tackle the unemployment challenges currently facing young people.

“At Nestlé UK & Ireland, we are committed to helping bridge the gap between young people’s interest in pursuing STEM careers and uptake of careers in these areas. By partnering with companies such as Twitter, our Alliance for YOUth initiative can help provide a host of new opportunities to young people that may be struggling to find employment or gain the skills they need to succeed.”

Nestlé UK will also participate in the first pan-European Twitter job fair set to take place on 24th February. The event aims to make careers-related advice and news accessible to Twitter users all over Europe, with each country using its own translation of a dedicated #YourJob hashtag. Nestlé UK will join in engaging directly with Twitter users through an online Q&A to advise on CV writing and prospective careers in the industry.

Katie Lampe, Head of Sales Operations, Twitter EMEA said:

“Helping young people into careers is a hugely important issue, which is why we’re proud to be playing a part in Nestlé’s Alliance for YOUth initiative with this exciting internship opportunity. We are further supporting this with the launch of our first pan-European job fair to help connect young people with career opportunities today.”

Alliance for YOUth

Nestlé’s Alliance for YOUth builds on the success of its previous employment initiative “Nestlé Needs YOUth” and extends its commitment to help young people find work opportunities through collaboration with Nestlé’s business partners, as part of its European Youth Employment Initiative. Over 150 companies have pledged their commitment to the Alliance for YOUth to create more than 100,000 opportunities for young people in Europe in the coming years.

As part of Nestlé’s European Youth Employment Initiative, it has also partnered with social enterprise MyKindaCrowd to offer online skills challenges, employability skills workshops and work experience to over 16,000 young people in the UK by 2016.  The partnership, which began in November 2013, will reach over 12,000 young people nationwide and a further 4,000 in 40 schools and colleges close to Nestlé UK sites, delivering online challenges and workshops with a focus on STEM subjects.

Nestlé UK & Ireland is also planning to place up to 50 per cent of its 2015 work experience intake within technical roles. Throughout next year’s National Apprenticeship Week, Nestlé’s apprentices will head into schools and colleges to take part in STEM-focused lessons, inspiring young people and providing an insight into the types of careers on offer.

About the research

Populus interviewed 103 decision makers at UK STEM businesses, 100 science and maths teachers and tutors at UK secondary schools and colleges, and 305 14-16 year old UK students, between 24 June and 7 July 2014.

About the Twitter Job Fair

The first European Twitter Job Fair will take place on Tuesday February 24.
