Nestlé sites across the UK are celebrating National Apprenticeship Week with a host of activities including seeing Nestlé UK and Ireland Group HR Director, Matt Stripe and Group Technical Director Peter Hagmann swapping their offices for the factory floor.

Matt will be shadowing Nestlé apprentice Alan Glenney as they make Quality Street and Easter Eggs at the Halifax factory while Peter will be working on the KitKat production line as he shadows apprentice Francesca Igoe on Friday at the company’s York factory.

Other Nestle sites and apprentices will also be taking part in a range of activities from Nestlé’s Apprenticeship and Fast Start Co-ordinator Lauren Macdonald who will shadow National Skills Academy CEO Justine Fosh to York and Dalston apprentices Ed Wilson, Jordan Phillips and Melanie Murray who are attending a reception at Downing Street on Thursday to showcase the creative talents of apprentices as part of The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) ‘Made by Apprentices’ event.

At other Nestle sites apprentices are swapping with counterparts from other factories to learn more about the business while others are holding open days for local colleges. At the same time factory managers will also go back to the factory floor and shadow an apprentice during the week.

Matt Stripe said: "Nestle has been running apprenticeship schemes for over 40 years and they are a great way to get practical experience on the job as well as a qualification. As part of our strategy to build the business it is vital we have a skilled and dynamic workforce and apprenticeships provide the perfect recruitment model and an unbeatable opportunity to start a new career.”

There are a total of 51 apprentices working across the business with plans to recruit up to 50 new apprentices in 2014 while 15 will finish their training this year. Through the Nestlé Academy, there are over 285 opportunities a year for young people to join the business.

This is part of Nestlé’s European Youth Employment Initiative, a commitment to helping at least 20,000 people across Europe under the age of 30 find employment by 2016; 1900 of these opportunities will be in the UK & Ireland.

Applications are now open at several Nestlé factories for apprenticeships with more opening throughout the year. For full details of how to apply and closing dates please go to www.nestlecareers.co.uk and click on the Academy page.
