Return of Dark chocolate production to Nestlé York

Oct 23, 2012
Kit Kat Dark ChocolateNestlé UK & Ireland has announced the reintroduction of dark chocolate production at its York site following a multimillion pound investment.

Full production will begin in October following trials and will be used in Kit Kat 70% Dark, Quality street, After Eight, and Matchmakers.  The site will be producing circa 8,000t per annum.

Dark chocolate was last made on-site until 2007 but following site re-structure, capacity was lost and a decision was taken to source from a third party.

Nestlé’s milk chocolate is produced at the Elect factory on-site and following the multimillion pound investment, plant improvements and greater efficiencies, capacity has been freed up within the factory to allow the production of dark chocolate to come back in-house.

Peter Gough, York Factory Manager said: “Dark chocolate is an important ingredient for a number of our products and the chocolate team has worked really hard to bring it back in-house.  Over a number of years, efficiencies in milk chocolate production has enabled an area to be made available solely for dark chocolate.   The employees have now been trained on making dark chocolate and are now ready to go.   This is another important addition to the York site and we look forward to consumers enjoying Nestlé products with York made dark chocolate from October.”
