MALAYSIA CODE COMPLIANCE

November 2006

A recent development in Malaysia illustrates our commitment to implement the WHO Code.

Nestlé universally follows all countries’ implementation of the WHO code. As part of our efforts to promote optimal infant feeding, Nestlé also supports strong
enforcement of national codes to protect mothers and children and to ensure that all companies meet the same marketing standards. In many developing countries, Nestlé is known among health authorities and health professionals for its strict Code compliance.

For instance, in Malaysia, the Ministry of Health in articles published  in The Star on the 19th and 20th August,  and the New Straits Times on 19th August, highlighted the prohibition imposed by the Ministry on the sale of new products by eight manufacturers of milk formula who have violated the Code of Ethics for infant formula. Of the twelve firms marketing breast-milk substitutes in Malaysia, only four, namely Meiji, Snow, Nestlé and Takaso, have got a positive recognition for Code compliance from the Ministry of Health.

Nestlé is the only non-Asian company which has met the Ministry’s criteria for Code adherence.
