IS IT SAFE TO EXERCISE DURING PREGNANCY?
Your safety and that of your baby is of prime importance at all times. You may begin to exercise in early pregnancy and continue for as long as you feel comfortable. You should also try to take part in the pre/antenatal classes that are available to you.

- Exercising during pregnancy will help keep your muscles toned and increase your stamina
Generally it is perfectly safe to exercise during pregnancy if you are healthy, and have an uncomplicated pregnancy.
However you should contact your GP first and choose carefully the type of exercise you do. Never over-exert yourself and keep your exercise routines slow and gentle.
Giving birth is the hardest form of physical exercise you are ever likely to experience. If you are in good shape, the strains, injuries and physical discomfort of pregnancy will decrease and your labour and recovery will be enhanced.
During Pregnancy
By exercising during pregnancy you can help keep your muscles toned and your body fit and increase your stamina. Exercising will also reduce the risk of excess weight gained during the months leading up to delivery and provide you with:
- General health improvement
- Improved body image and self esteem
- A chance to meet other pregnant women and most importantly to have fun
Tip: try to start off with short walks, and pelvic floor strengthening exercises.
After Pregnancy
After birth, new mums will start to experience sporadic weight changes. It is important to allow the weight to come off slowly and naturally, especially if you are breastfeeding, and to eat healthily.
