FLUIDS
Understanding a little about nutrition and your body can make dieting easier. The following information explains why you should keep well hydrated whilst trying to lose weight.

- Drink at least eight glasses of fluids a day (including water) to help keep well hydrated
It is important to keep well hydrated when trying to lose weight as the body can confuse thirst signals for hunger. Drink eight glasses of fluid per day including water, fruit juice, squash, tea, coffee and herbal teas to stay hydrated. Alcohol is high in calories and can also hinder weight loss plans by reducing will power.
The Department of Health recommend women drink no more than two to three units of alcohol per day (three to four units for men). The lowest calorie options for alcoholic drinks are clear spirits with diet mixers e.g. gin and diet tonic or vodka with a diet cola. Alternate alcoholic drinks with soft drinks and avoid drinking on an empty stomach.
Examples of drinks containing one unit of alcohol:
- ½ pint of ordinary strength beer, larger or cider
- a single measure of spirit (whisky, gin, barcadi, or vodka etc.)
- a small glass of wine
- a small glass of sherry
There is no evidence that light or occasional drinking during pregnancy and breastfeeding will harm your baby. However, to be on the safe side, stop altogether or try to keep your alcohol intake to a minimum (e.g. no more than one or two units of alcohol a week).
