DAD'S ROLE DURING PREGNANCY

A new baby will bring big changes to your life. Talking to other parents and preparing for the birth can help relieve any worries you may have.

Lifestyle Changes
Although a first pregnancy is an exciting and adventurous time, the unknown can raise many questions and concerns about pregnancy, labour and the subsequent years. It can be hard to imagine your new role as a parent. At around 20 weeks, the movement of the foetus inside the uterus can be felt from the outside. This is often the first time partners begin to visualise themselves as a prospective parent.

Throughout pregnancy, the more obvious physical changes are accompanied by hormonal and emotional changes. This is when a pregnant woman most appreciates understanding and support from her partner. Attending regular antenatal classes provides the opportunity for parents to discuss the pregnancy and share thoughts with other prospective parents as well as receive instructions from an expert on all aspects of childbirth.

Routine scans offer the chance for both parents to see that all is well with mother and child.

Preparation for Labour
Many parents devise a birth plan in preparation for labour. It is important that you discuss the birth process and ensure that both of you agree on the type of birth you want. Some fathers opt to attend either the labour or actual birth. Many are present throughout both.

Studies have shown social support throughout the birth can reduce the need for pain relieving drugs. If you, as the father, decide not to attend, a suitable alternate birthing partner could be asked to provide the necessary support.
