DAD'S ROLE DURING LABOUR
As the big day draws near, a birth plan will help both of you feel prepared for the labour.
If the birth is going to be away from home, it will help to have a suitcase packed sometime before the due date. Babies can arrive early, so be prepared.

- A supportive partner will be appreciated throughout pregnancy as well as during labour
Consider the following before you go:
- Wear a few thin layers as it can get warm in the labour room
- Take a toothbrush and toothpaste to freshen up
- Face cloths or small towels are also useful
- You may wish to take sweets and mints
- Take loose change for the phone
- Mobile phones have to be switched off in hospitals
- Take a list of phone numbers for those you will want to call
- Many couples like to play their favourite therapeutic music for the birth - check with the hospital first and take along a portable CD player
- Tell the midwife in advance if you wish to cut the umbilical cord
Be prepared for a long wait as labour can last over 24 hours. Take frequent breaks, and be sure to eat properly and keep well hydrated. A supportive partner with enough energy to last during labour and birth will really be appreciated.
