Preparation Table
The recommended volume of Modulen IBD should be advised by a Dietitian.
  • Before preparation wash hands thoroughly.
  • Ensure all equipment and the preparation area are clean.
  • Measure the desired amount of powder using the scoop in the can.

(One level scoop is equivalent to approximately 8.2g and 41kcal).

Refer to the mixing table below:
Volume of water  Modulen IBD  Total Volume of Feed  Calories provided
 200ml  6 scoops  250ml  250kcal
 420ml  12 scoops  500ml  500kcal
 850ml  24 scoops  1000ml  1000kcal
1740ml 1 can 2000ml 2000kcal

  •  Use cooled previously boiled water or sterile water.
  • Add the powder to the water and stir with a fork or a whisk.
  • Cover and refrigerate.
  • Mix well before serving.
  • Refrigerated product can be kept for 12 hours, non-chilled product can be kept for 4 hours only
  • (4 hours is also the recommended hanging time for Modulen IBD when used for tube feeding).
  • Discard product after these times
Handy Hints
  • On starting Modulen IBD, build up to your recommended volume over 2 to 3 days (discuss this with your Dietitian and ensure that you have adequate fluid whilst you are building up your total fluid volume). It does not need to be diluted further.
  • A Modulen IBD shaker is available to mix single 250ml drinks
  • Modulen IBD can be kept chilled in a flask for work or school
  • Using a straw can make it easier to take
  • In cold weather try warming the feed gently, to make a warm drink (do not boil though as this can alter
    the nutritional content).
  • In hot weather, try freezing it and making into ice-lollies
  • Brush your teeth more often to keep your mouth fresh
  • Include extra water to drink in your daily routine, especially in the summer months

Commonly Asked Questions
Is TGF-ß2 found in other milk products and what are its benefits?
TGF-ß2 is naturally present in human and bovine milk. Modulen IBD provides a concentrated form of TGF-ß2 above the levels naturally found in milk. Other formulas will not contain this level because they may not be casein based, and heat treatment destroys TGF-ß2.

TGF-ß2 possesses an anti-inflammatory property, promotes growth and tissue repair, and hence promotes the healing of gut wall ulceration.
Is Modulen the same as AL110?
AL110 is an infant formula produced for infant requirements. Similar to Modulen IBD, the protein in AL110 is casein based and therefore a source of TGF-ß2. Modulen IBD is based on the same formula, but has additional energy, protein, vitamins and minerals, in line with the requirements of older children and adults. (NB Al110 is no longer available in the UK)
Why should Modulen IBD be used for eight weeks?
Modulen IBD should be used as a sole source of nutrition for eight weeks to allow time for the intestinal mucosa to heal and for the patient to achieve remission. Clinical evidence shows that the longer the patient allows healing to occur, the greater the period of remission.
The clinical evidence so far is from studies in children. What about adults?
Clinicians state that the efficacy of Modulen IBD in children with Crohn's disease can be applied to adults. Many Dietitians throughout the UK have used Modulen IBD successfully in adults. Please contact NCN for further information.
Why should sterile/cooled boiled water be used to mix Modulen IBD?
There are potential risks involved with bacterial contamination from tap water. During illness a person's immune system can be compromised. In view of this risk it is safer to use sterile water in the healthcare setting, and cooled boiled water at home.
Can food be eaten whilst taking Modulen IBD?
This depends on whether Modulen IBD is being taken as a sole source of nutrition for treatment of active Crohn's disease, or as a supplement during remission.
For treatment of active Crohn's disease, food should not be eaten to avoid any possible food intolerance, or irritation to the gut.

After the 8 week period, once full remission has been achieved, the food re-introduction programme can begin. This should be discussed with a Dietitian and practices may differ between different hospitals. Modulen IBD can be continued through this stage as a nutritional supplement and reduced as food intake increases.

For patients who are in remission, requiring nutritional support, Modulen IBD can be taken in addition to food.
Why is Modulen IBD not available as a liquid?
The heat treatment required to make the liquid would destroy the TGF-ß2.
What is the GM position on Modulen IBD?
Modulen IBD does not contain DNA/protein from GM soya and/or maize
