POOR APPETITE
It is estimated that 70% of all under-nutrition in the UK goes unrecognised and untreated. It is also estimated that 40% of adults and 15% of children admitted to hospital are malnourished, half of these severely so, and that many others become malnourished during their stay in hospital.

Introduction of Nutritional Support
Introduction of nutritional support to malnourished individuals can help to improve patient health. In the McWhirter and Pennington study, it was found that 70% of patients referred for nutritional support showed an improvement in weight. In addition, the use of nutritional supplementation resulted in significant weight gain in malnourished patients and those at risk of malnutrition [Lacque et al. 1999]. Nutritional support can be beneficial to those who have developed a poor appetite, are either ill or recovering, with other complications and those with smaller appetites, such as when people get older, they can sometimes fall short of the nutrients needed to keep healthy and active.
