CROHN'S DISEASE

Crohn’s disease is a chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. It can affect any part from the lips to the anus, but most commonly affects the ileum and colon.

Crohn’s disease typically involves all layers of the intestinal wall causing pain and diarrhoea. Crohn’s disease is often discontinuous, making surgical removal of all affected areas difficult and often impractical. There is no cure for this disease but it can be kept in remission for significant lengths of time. Treatment options include drug treatment, surgery to remove the effected part, nutritional supplements or a combination of these options.

Nutritional support plays an important role in the treatment of Crohn’s Disease. Research has shown that treatment with enteral nutrition can be as effective as steroids in bringing the disease into remission.
