Nestlé Confectionery UK are partnering with the Yorkshire Film Archive to restore what claims to be the first animated commercial with synchronised  sound starring the iconic brand mascot Mr. York of York.

Made in 1929, this unique film shot on 35mm nitrate film stock is a stunning example of Rowntree’s innovate approach to marketing chocolate. Lasting over six minutes, the commercial uses sound and animation to promote the delicious flavour of York Milk Bar through a series of funny incidents staring Mr. York. The original film is kept in a specialist blast room by the British Film Institute as nitrate film’s chemical composition is highly flammable as it deteriorates, and as such, specialist licensed storage facilities are required.

This advert is part of a major collection deposited by Nestlé at the Yorkshire Film Archive. It includes a wealth of fascinating material from a 1920 royal visit by the HRH Duke of York to the Rowntree factory to 1970s adverts for quality street chocolates. Megan McCooley, Moving Image Archivist at the YFA says, “It’s exciting to have the opportunity to restore such an important film, not only to the Yorkshire region but nationally as well. Working in conjunction with the BFI and Nestlé, we’re really looking forward to using digital technology to restore Mr. York of York, back to his former glory.”

You can see the Nestlé collection by appointment at the Yorkshire Film Archive located at York St. John University.
