Commodity Control Accountant, Commodities Purchasing Centre Of Competence (CPCC)
I started my career as an Accounts Assistant in an Advertising Agency in Manchester where I simultaneously qualified as an Accounting Technician. I then moved over to Yorkshire and worked as an Assistant Accountant for a Facilities Management company before moving to be Head Office Accountant for a global plastics firm whilst studying for my ACCA qualification.
I was not really looking for a job at the time, but had been asked to pass on some details of a number of jobs at Nestlé in York to a CIMA qualified friend. I looked at the roles and the Commodity Control Accountant one stood out as it looked interesting and completely different to what I was doing at the time. It made me realize that I needed a change as I seemed to know the role I was in inside out and that I didn’t seem to be getting any career progression where I was working.
So I updated my CV, sent it and within days had an interview. The interview wasn’t easy as there was a formal competency interview with HR and a member of the Nestlé Rowntree Division Control and Reporting department. I then gave a presentation and completed a mathematical test. After the interview I realized that I wasn’t just interested in the role but I really wanted it!
I joined Nestlé Rowntree in January 2006 as a Commodity Control Accountant and my role is to tie up the cocoa futures that Commodities Purchasing Centre Of Competence (CPCC) in Croydon buy for hedging purposes, with the actual cocoa products we use. It’s quite a technical job, but the amount of money we spend on cocoa products makes it necessary to have a controller in place. I work closely with the Chocolate Supply department in York factory and the CPCC in Croydon to make sure actual figures and forecasts are correct to lower the associated price variances.
I also do other work within the control team such as cost centre overheads and various month end P&L detail checking and reporting. I haven’t worked at Nestlé as long as most of the other people in the NRD Finance department, but I’m certainly starting to feel like a member of the family.
