Water

Water is one of the earth’s most precious resources and water conservation is central to Nestlé’s environmental priorities.
Since 1997 Nestlé globally has more than doubled its food production, but increased efficiency has seen water consumption decrease by 29%.

The Nestlé 2006 Water Management Report outlines the steps that we have taken to assist in efficient water management around the world, both within our own operations and in the communities where we work. Further information on the policies and activities relating to water management can be found at www.water.Nestle.com

Nestlé in the UK & Ireland Target 2010: Reduce water usage by 10% against a 2006 baseline:

Successes

  • Our water usage is reducing year–on–year and in 2007 water consumption in Nestlé factories fell by 20% per tonne of product, exceeding the target of 5%.
  • In 2006 Buxton Water reduced the water used in its bottling processes by 17% although production went up by 11%

  • Savings are also being made in Nestlé’s offices and administrative buildings: water saving initiatives at our head office in East Croydon contributed to us being awarded the Silver Envibe Award from Croydon Council in 2007

  • When making NESCAFÉ Cappuccino, a by–product of water, milk components and vegetable oils is generated. We installed an advanced waste water treatment plant in our Dalston factory to produce clean waste water. The resulting by–product is used as fertiliser by local farmers.
