Environment

For a business to be successful in the long term, it must create value not only for its shareholders but also for society.

We call this commitment Creating Shared Value (CSV); and we focus our efforts in three key areas: nutrition, water and rural development. Those areas are core to our company’s business strategy and essential to creating a better and healthier world in the 21st century.

Sustainable development is fundamental to Nestlé's business success and long term development. In all of our business operations we do as much as possible to ensure that we meet our present needs without compromising those of future generation.

Manufacturing and other areas of business have an impact on the environment. Nestlé, with its suppliers, partners and customers, is working hard to address and reduce that impact, complementing the activities of the wider food industry and Government. In the UK and Ireland we have developed a Sustainability Strategy that sets out short and long term priorities for each of our brands, as well as Nestlé in the UK and Ireland as a whole.

Our priority areas are:

Water

Water is one of the earth’s most precious resources and water conservation is central to Nestlé’s environmental priorities.

Waste

Nestlé aims to reduce or recycle as much as possible and has developed initiatives to reduce packaging, helping our customers and consumers to reduce their waste.

Energy

In the past 10 years, Nestlé businesses globally have reduced their energy consumption by 42% per tonne of product. Nestlé is committed to realizing further savings in energy consumption and has set targets for continuous improvement.

Sourcing

More than 610,000 farmers supply Nestlé directly and we have a responsibility to treat them fairly, while promoting sustainable farming methods to improve crop quality and yield, which in turn increases farmers income.

Packaging

Nestlé has been reducing the amount of packaging it produces since the early 1990s through a global source reduction programme.  More than half of Nestlé’s packaging in the UK and Ireland is recyclable and is constantly reviewed to further reduce the amount of packaging used.
